IFFS Progesterone course Biosketch for Professor Hilary Critchley, University of Edinburgh (January 2025)

Professor Hilary Critchley holds a Personal Chair in Reproductive Medicine at the University of Edinburgh (UoE). She has held roles as Head of Deanery of Clinical Sciences (UoE; 2012-23); Co-Director, UoE Centre for Reproductive Health (2022-24) and Honorary Consultant Gynaecologist at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh (from 1993). She is immediate past Chair of FIGO Committee for Menstrual Disorders and Related Health Impacts (Chair, 2021-23).

Hilary is a clinical academic whose research programme for over 30 years has focused upon the biology of the endometrium, disorders of menstruation and abnormal uterine bleeding from biological and clinical perspectives.

Her commitment to addressing problems of menstrual bleeding embraces not only how research can enhance our understanding and care, but also how we ā€œtackle the tabooā€ around menstruation. Her expertise has national /international recognition. She is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Medical Sciences and Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, and an International Member of US National Academy of Medicine. Hilary is committed to seeing research in reproductive health maintain a critical mass, so it achieves a prominent position in the national/ global health funding arena. She is an advocate for mentorship in supporting the careers of Clinical and non-Clinical Academics.
